Postpartum Support in Melbourne: What are your options?

Why postpartum support is vital in the first 6 weeks

The first six weeks after birth, often referred to as the fourth trimester, are a time of huge physical and emotional change. While your baby is adjusting to life outside the womb, you’re recovering from pregnancy and birth, learning to feed and finding your rhythm as a new family.

Good postpartum support can make a world of difference. From reassurance about what’s normal, to breastfeeding guidance and emotional check-ins, the right care helps families feel confident, calm and supported. In Melbourne, there are a few different options for postpartum care, each with its benefits and limitations.

Option 1: Public support (Hospital, Maternal & Child Health Nurse)

Most families in Melbourne will receive some form of follow-up through the public system, we are SO lucky to have access to these resources. This can look like;

  • Hospital midwife visit: after you’re discharged from hospital, most hospitals provide 1-2 home visits, usually within the first week. These visits are helpful for a quick check on mum and bub, but they’re often brief so have limited scope.

  • Maternal & Child Health Nurse (MCHN): between 1-2 weeks postpartum, families are booked for an appointment with their council family nurse. The first one is usually at home, it’s a great free service, but again appointments can feel rushed because they are so busy! Ongoing support can depend on availability.

> Public services provide an important safety net, but many families find the care ends too soon or doesn’t go deep enough into recovery, feeding or emotional wellbeing.

Option 2: Private hospital support

Over 20% of families in Melbourne will choose to go through a private hospital and obstetrician for their maternity care. Care following discharge varies between hospitals, but since you generally stay longer after you birth in a private hospital (5-6 days on average), you won’t usually receive any home visits to follow up. Rest assured you will still have your appointment with a Maternal & Child Health Nurse.

Option 3: Private Midwife support

For families wanting more personalised, consistent care, booking a private postpartum midwife can be transformative. With in-home visits, you receive holistic care tailored to your needs such as;

  • Breastfeeding and feeding support (positioning, supply questions, troubleshooting challenges)

  • Newborn care guidance (settling, cues, nappies, bathing)

  • Maternal recovery checks (wound healing, bleeding, blood pressure, emotional wellbeing)

  • Emotional support and birth debriefs to help process your experience

  • Practical advice for easing daily life in the newborn bubble

Because you see the same midwife across multiple visits, you build trust and continuity, something often missing in the public system.

With Medicare rebates available, families can access private postpartum care from as little as $57.40 out of pocket per visit, making it more accessible than many expect.

Virtual support for flexibility & reach

Sometimes in-person visits aren’t practical, or perhaps you live outside Melbourne, virtual postpartum care is a growing option that brings professional support to families via Telehealth. Virtual visits can cover feeding questions, birth debriefing, newborn care and guidance and reassurance on what’s normal and when to seek further care. This makes individualised support accessible Australia-wide, even for families without local services.
